Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market Lara Litchfield-Kimber 75 N. Water Street Poughkeepsie NY 12601 12601 845 471 0589 4:00pm 7:30pm June October Yes Yes Through our work with families in our museum space, particularly among inner city residents with pre-school aged children, we learned that many local families experience significant food insecurity throughout the year. Of particular concern for this audience is the connection between childhood nutrition and school performance and school readiness. Our children’s garden has helped us expand our nutrition education programming into our field trip programs, drop-in museum programs and family learning nights. But without access to fresh, healthy and affordable food many of our families are “food insecure” simply cannot make healthy changes to their diets. “Food insecurity” refers to the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. High rates of food insecurity are closely linked to both malnutrition and hunger.

According to the Community Food Assessment published by Poughkeepsie Plenty (2012), the level of food insecurity in the City of Poughkeepsie outpaces the U.S. as a whole, all U.S. inner cities, and the Northeast region. In fact, the USDA recently classified two large areas within the City of Poughkeepsie (specifically, two census tracts covering most of the City’s north side and the Poughkeepsie Waterfront) as a “food desert.” This term refers to areas with poverty levels of at least 20% that are located more than a mile away from a supermarket or large grocery store. A 2014 report by The Center for Research, Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO) shows that over one in four (26.8%) City of Poughkeepsie households experienced food insecurity, including 11% that are food insecure with hunger. Furthermore, a disproportionate number of the individuals affected by food insecurity and hunger in Poughkeepsie are children (41%)

In a major move to address and alleviate food insecurity, malnutrition and childhood obesity in the City of Poughkeepsie, MHCM looks to create and operate a new public farmers market in its waterfront pavilion and expand its nutrition education programming for families. The focus of this market will be on making fresh, locally sourced food available to the residents and families of the City of Poughkeepsie, ensuring that food options are affordable, and on educating the public (especially families with young children) on nutrition and meal preparation using food available at the market. The target audiences for the market are residents of the City of Poughkeepsie and visitors to the museum (families with young children from throughout the Hudson Valley).
