Management Styles, Vendor Clusters and Market Cohesion: Learning from Qualitative Research on Farmers Market Organizations 

How does your approach as a market manager shape your vendors’ experiences? This presentation shares early results from two qualitative studies on how farmers market management impacts vendor economic viability and quality of life.

Through examples and stories from the southeastern US, anthropologists Hilary B. King and Andrea Rissing will:

1. cover different market management styles, activities and associated vendor responses

2. review market management priorities around which vendors cluster and split

3. share recommendations for clarifying your own market style to increase market cohesion.

This research is on-going, so attendees in this session will also have the opportunity to participate in paid feedback opportunities in the future.

Harvest Home Farmer’s Market is offering an incentive program to farmers to sell their crops in New York City markets!

Harvest Home Farmer's Market operates 14 farmer's markets in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Upper Manhattan. We are committed to bringing local food to all New York City neighborhoods and are looking to welcome new farmers in 2024! This program, called Farm-to-City, is for farmers, especially traditionally-underserved farmers, expanding to a new Harvest Home market. Farms can be reimbursed up to $7,000 for each market for costs related to selling crops with Harvest Home. Producers can use subsidized funds to offset expenses, including but not limited to:

• Fuel

• Tools

• Labor

• Market equipment

• Seeds

• Market rent

Markets at Harvest Home run from June through November. For 2024, we are particularly looking for fruit growers, but welcome all farmers to apply.
